Jay Hutchinson

Jay Hutchinson is another artist that works in a Gallery as a Collections Assistant at Dunedin Public Art Gallery. Having graduated with a BFA and MFA at the Dunedin School of Fine Arts, Hutchinson’s practice has continued to evolve over the past 15 years.

He is often described as an embroidery or textile artist, but his practice encompasses performance, sculpture, screen printing and graffiti. A number of themes emerge throughout his practice, the idea of collecting or archiving - which makes sense given his day job. But it could also be described as a rumination on consumption and mass production from an anarchistic Marxist perspective. Most recently a solo show at the Suter Art Gallery and as part of the SOLO series at The Dowse Art Museum.
